Although all activeCollab releases are important, some are just more important than the other ones. They can be divided into two groups:

  1. Branches are major releases that introduce a lot of new changes and improvements. These releases are marked with major version number plus the number after the first dot (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.2 etc).
  2. Releases inside of a branch that improve stability and introduce minor enhancements. These releases are marked with a number after the second dot (1.1.3, 2.0.4, 3.3.8 etc).

Another thing makes branches important: it's the access to the files as part of your Upgrade and Support plan which is tied to them. What this means is that you get access to all releases in all branches while you are in Upgrade and Support plan. Once you get access to a branch, you can download all smaller releases within it. This lets you have access to the most stable release within a branch even when your Upgrade and Support plan expires.

Let me explain with an example: *

You decide that today, October 6th 2008. is a fine day to purchase activeCollab. Now that you have a license purchased, you get access to activeCollab 1.1 branch and its latest release, plus one year of upgrade (expires on October 6th 2009).

Spring 2009 comes and we release activeCollab 1.2. It's all great because you are within Upgrade and Support plan and you get instant access to this branch.

In September 2009. we release activeCollab 2.0 and you get access to that branch also. Because of that, you still get the access to all 2.0.x releases even when your plan expires. If we release activeCollab 2.0.2 in November 2009. you’ll be able to download it even through your Upgrade and Support plan expired a month ago and you didn’t renew.

Couple of months later we release activeCollab 2.1, but this time you don’t get access to that branch because your Upgrade and Support plan is expired - the latest release available to you is the one which belongs to 2.0 branch (precisely, to the branch that was actual at the moment when your Upgrades and Support plan expired). To get access to this new branch you’ll need to renew your subscription for another year.

Additional information about Upgrade and Support services and branches can be found in this knowledge base article. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

* Dates in this example are not real. This is not activeCollab roadmap!

So what about security updates – do those come for free. Like with Microsoft you would think this is something that should simply be included with ActiveCollab correct?

As mentioned in the text, security updates are part of minor releases and are shipped per branch. Because you have a permanent access to the branch, you’ll have access to all of these releases.

Is there a feature roadmap or wish list for 2.0 available?
avatar Ilija Studen 2008-11-24 9:21
We do not have public roadmap or discuss features of upcoming releases so the answer to your question is No, there is no roadmap or wish list available for activeCollab 2. Still, if you wish to request a new feature or suggest improvements to existing features, you can use Feature / Plugin Request forum or send us a message through Support Portal.

It seems that you have your years the other way around :) Shouldn’t it be going from 2008 to 2009 down the arrow not the other way around? Just thought I’d be picky :)

I am currently running 1.1 smallbiz and my upgrade plan expires in March. I am considering upgrading to corporate. Does this extend my upgrade plan?
avatar Ilija Studen 2009-01-17 12:24
@o3: Upgrade to Corporate version does not renew your Support and Upgrade plan. Upgrade gives you access to the features that are not included in Small Biz, but are available in activeCollab Corporate.

So if I maintain smallbiz and 1.2 comes out, is there an option for upgrading to 1.2 at the $200 level?
avatar Ilija Studen 2009-01-17 12:28
Small Biz to Corporate upgrade is not related in any way with Support and Upgrade. For $200 you get access to all the advanced features offered in Corporate version.

activeCollab 1.2 is wrapping up really nicely and is closer to beta each day. If your Support and Upgrade expires in March you’ll most probably get access to 1.2. Access to branch includes access to all minor releases in it so you’ll also get all 1.2.x versions.
