Hi there, I work for a small charity who'll be coordinating a larger research project with multiple collaborators discussing and reviewing various documents from various locations, with task lists etc.

I see that it has "Page" functionality, but wondered whether activeCollab is the best software for this sort of project? Or is there something else more appropriate?

Does anyone have an opinion?

Or is that a stupid question in a forum?!!

I Love aC, but you might want to check out the writeboard functions of Basecamp.

for comparing multiple versions Basecamp is far easier to use than aC in this area. If you only have one project on, you can try basecamp out for free for two writeboards.

I feel bad about saying that, but basecamp has been around for a lot longer & has had some great implemented areas (like the writeboards).

I tend to disagree. Our company has been heavily involved in research projects for several years and the writeboards from basecamp are not at all sufficient for writing deliverables. We never use them. We are currently switching from basecamp to activecollab for all our research projects (I'm talking about research projects with total budget of more than 40 million euro's).

The versioning system in combination with regular text editors should be sufficient. Although, if you really want to be able to check out documents, edit them and then check them back in, there is a thing called copperproject. But copperproject has an inferior interface, is more sales-focused and seems to be made for advertising agencies.

Thanks for your advice.

I think the core documents will be edited/updated by only one or two people per "chapter". What we would like to facilitate is a broader discussion around elements of each "chapter" and subsequently their peer-review by third parties, would active collab be suitable for this?

Absolutely. You can comment on anything you upload (for example new versions) and have a discussion about the document there.

We made Pages module to help teams that need to produce simple and complex documents (from blog posts to documentation projects) in collaborative fashion.

This is what you can do with Pages module:

- Create multiple documents and organize them into tree like structure
- Track changes
- Post page related tasks with task priority and assignees
- Post unlimited number of comments
- Attach unlimited number of files
- Receive email notifications when new comment or revision is posted

Yes to be fair - I didn't think of this, but yes, if you have a large number of documents to organize, then yes aC is the better choice. The structure and ability to have task lists on those pages is way better.

I just liked the visual feed back of comparing 2 documents in basecamp - but we use those for short 1 or 2 page items, not for multi-page reports.
