I clearly understand how to set client user permissions when adding them to a project but is there any way to go back and change a client user's permissions?

You can change clients permissions by clicking on Change Permissions icon next to user on project People page. This option is available on for members of client companies. Members of owner company have all the permissions in a project.

Wow, that's pretty subtle. I thought I has looked everywhere and I missed it completely. But I figured it had to be there somewhere. Thx.

One of the conventions you'll find through entire application is that modify options (except descriptive ones such is star or priority) are always on the right.

As per Ilija above,

Members of owner company have all the permissions in a project.

If they need lesser permissions, you will have to add them into their own client company.

ah, i see. sorry i was confused. it would be great if the different levels (like contractor for example) could have slightly lesser permissions on projects when needed.
