I just found out I could "pin" projects to the top on the dashboard page -- which is good, that way I can get quick view of several active projects I'm working on at the moment. Trouble is, I can only do the "pinning" from dashboard page. Wouldn't it be even nicer if we can do that from the project overview page as well? E.g. as one of the command under Options?

A little screenshot from upcoming activeCollab 1.1 (Pin / Unpin available in Options menu on project overview page).

Seems like you have already gotten it covered, then again, of course, it's Ilija we are talking about. All hail Ilija! :)

Is there a pin function for tasks/tickets? We have some that just "must" be at the top of the list for the day...

kthomas, I'll help answer this question: for task/tickets, you can just "star" them, and view them in the starred section.

Yeah, there's that... currently we've been tagging them as "META," etc... 'cause the search function will just get them... but...

I'll probably have a lot to say about views once 1.1 is stable... and I look over the code... but "a better dashboard," with sections/panels, is essentially what we need.

Yes, it's called priority :) Just give the highest priority to tasks and tickets you want to have listed on top. If you are using Assignments page a lot make sure that assignments are sorted by priority, highest first.

;) I try to keep that list down to what appears on the first page but it's always a struggle.

There are usually two or three "meta" tasks that I would wish to "sticky to top" of this list and/or mark with a special label/color to remind me that they are quite distinct from all of the rest of the tasks with "highest" priority-- for instance, that project proposal which was due (previous) Friday.

As well, between projects, one "highest" priority item may be an apple and another an orange-- if we're doing a low-revenue project, for instance, something may be of "highest" priority BUT it will pale before the "normal" priority items in a "rush" job project. We're not a huge shop but being able to sort appropriately and adjust priorities/pressures day-to-day is critical.
