Direct upgrade should work just fine so just follow the instrucntions provided in the first post.
If it fails from any reason, revert back to v1.0.4, upgrade to v1.0.6 as instructed here and than upgrade to v1.1.

I received this error message -- I looked in include.php and everything looked right -- HELP!!

This was fixed because we put this on a separate subfolder /projects/ so we had to manually update include.php to include this path.
