I just noticed that Dreamhost has added aC to its 'One-Click Installs' panel (have a look if you're one of their customers).

I'm sure Ilija will love this! ;) Great beginnings for a 0.6 version, I wonder where you will be when you hit 1.0? Way to go!

Update: here's a quick and dirty screencap:

Yea, this is really exciting and I'm really suprised. To be honest, I never expected 10% of things that are happening, at least not at this point.

This is great and all, but isn't it also rather premature?

Good eye, that's fabulous. (DreamHost seems to be peopled by a good crew ... a nice combination!)

As I replied in the blog, installation requires that PGP5 be used, and I'm not certain that's trouble-free ... maybe someone could write a page in the DreamHost Wiki, or add something?

I don't doubt that this will go very well, but I can't take on anything extra right now, i.e. it isn't /quite/ 1-click.

congrats / thanks

Hi Ben,

I know its a bit strange now, but I hope we'll make it far more easier with 0.7. Check out this ticket for the idea.

NB: Just why things went wrong is not clear ... perhaps latency in my host's system. In any case, DreamHost installation supplied the required data very gracefully and the /install scripts executed flawlessly. --BenTremblay

Hello Ilija ... it's all good!

I did the 1-click but when I went to bentrem.sycks.net/collab/ I was served "activeCollab is not installed. Please redirect your browser to /install folder and follow installation procedure" ... and then "Not Found The requested URL /install was not found on this server"

I strongly suggest that promise not exceed delivery; folk anticipating 1-click won't like this, e.g. I did this as a back-task and now it's taking over.

Has DreamHost 1-click been walked through? They do a good job of supporting installation details.

Check out this ticket for the idea.

"it would make creation of one-click installers much easier (create tables, insert inital data and redirect)"

*blink*

If it isn't 1-click then it shouldn't be presented in the 1-click menu ... folk are going to feel that they've been walked into a pool of quicksand.

regards

p.s. I'll definitely be persisting with this ... look forward to getting at /collab/ by shell! :-)

I don't expect any hosting provider to hack their system to provide a real one click installation (that would mean adding aC specific operations to their control panes). But I think that "two clicks" (1: provide system information in CP; 2: define your company and admin in the script) is good enough.

Good thing here is that hosting company like DH sees potential in activeCollab and that we got some kind of "feedback" from them that we can use to imrpove the installation process so they can make it even better next time.

I certainly didn't mean anything like hacking, no ... just supporting notification of any particular data.

And in fact that's what they did: DreamHost Installer Robot email notification included a very neatly written list of steps and specifics. Bravo.

I'm sorry /install/ failed to show up the first time I tried ... perhaps that was merely latency on DreamHost ... the process actually went very smoothly.

Absolutely. And credit where credit is due: (a lot of betas out there really exploit their users i.e. they're clumsy and inconsiderated) everything I've seen so far shows a real crafstman-like intelligence. Well done.

cheers

p.s. the install script might want to include "Delete Installation" information. Just to be on the safe side. (I'm trying to load ilija.biz/scriptinstaller but that server is not responding.)

p.s.2 I just connected with the folk in VirtualCollaboratory. Their workflow *cough* suggests that activeCollab might find a place in their tool-set.

http://bentrem.sycks.net/collab is on the air!

I made a few notes / first impressions ... like how star causes bold, i.e. both HTML and alternative markup are enabled, placement of "Edit" for attached file etc etc etc.

< less than? <b> bold? Here it shows text; in aColl it acts as markup ... neither case is correct: it should show the character so we can quote source easily. (Yes I'm sure there's a way to enter special characters ... not the point ... point is: easy and simple.)

Nice!
