People creating a task do not get notification of it even though they assign themselves.

A lot of our users are saying that when they create a task they don't get an e-mail notification of it even though they have assigned themselves to the item.
Everyone else assigned to the item gets a notification so I am guessing this is a deliberate thing?

Yes, this is by design. Notifications are not sent to people executing the action. They will receive notifications about actions done to that task or ticket by others in the future (close, open, comment) but will not receive any notifications for thing they do.
