Overall, very impressed. Close to moving forward.

I read a handful of posts (e.g. http://www.activecollab.com/forums/topic/2027/), still not quite clear on the upgrade options.

Let's say I invest today and a year from now decide against the support/upgrade cost. Shortly after that, aC 2.0 is released with unbelievable new features and I've gotta have it.

Will I need to pay the retail $399 all over again or as a previous customer, will I be allowed to re-engage a support contract at the $199 level to take advantage of the new upgrade?

Thanks.

No, there will be no need to purchase a license again. In the case you described you'd purchase $199 upgrade package and got access to support and all upgrades (v2.0 included) for a year.

Will aC ever consider to have a 'free updates for life' to its customers in the future?

No. "For life" is a really long time, plus development costs both time and money. Upgrades are important revenue stream for majority of software businesses. That is something that keeps them around and motivated to continue improving their products.

I've just recently heard a story from Mac indie development shop that offered free for life upgrades when they started. Eventually they learned a hard lesson that you cannot base your business solely on new customers. At the end they were forced to offer customer two options - to go out of business or to introduce "pay for upgrades" model. Most of customers voted to have them around :) And they are still in business, producing some nice Mac apps.

Nice explanation Ilija. I understand now.

Yes I have several Mac apps that are free updates for life or maybe "free updates until version x".
Seems like the 2nd option sounds pretty win-win for aC & customers? :p
