If you are GMail user you might consider using as your outgoing mail server. To set up GMail, go to Administration > Mailing and from Mailing type drop-down select SMTP. Settings are:
Just a quick note, this will work with Google Apps -- only difference would be username would be you@yourdomain.com instead of a gmail.com address --- but the smtp.gmail.com is still the correct outgoing server address.
Neophyte Qs: What are the advantages of this? (I'm sure there could be many, but don't know enough about it) Could users then review emails auto-generated by activCollab in their google sent box?
This information is not posted because GMail offers something other providers don't offer. There is nothing special about it and the sole reason why this information is posted is because GMail is popular, reliable and free so many people use it. It works when other options (like your hosting provider for example) may fail to provide reliable service. Check out this topic to see mailing issues on GoDaddy server for example.

We're using google apps and cannot get AC to work sending emails with the google apps settings. Have used different email accounts, the 2 outgoing port settings that google provides and nothing. Messages are never received and when we login to google apps email account there's nothing in the sent items. Any advise?
@James: Try the instructions provided in this message. When debugging is turned on, mailer will log activities so you can use it to see what is going on.
