Original activeCollab code is still available in the same form and under the same license as it was originally released. It's free as it always were and you are free to continue its development if you wish (which some did - original activeCollab has a couple of active or semi-active forks).
Freedom guaranteed by the original license is still there for you to take advantage of.
activeCollab 1.0 and later is near complete rewrite or original codebase (some framework libraries were reused) and the rewrite was made as proprietary project from the day one. activeCollab stopped being "cloned application" long long time ago.
PS: Topic locked. These discussions are over for almost two years now. You have both new and old activeCollab, as well as number of competing products on the market, so you can definitely find something that fits your needs.
