Self hosted on local server advice

Hi there,

Because of speed and disk space issues we have decided to self-host activecollab on a local server.

This installation will be used by a group of about 15-20 users at most in the same local network.
Remote acces will be used very little by just a few "on the go" users.

What hardware specs would you reccomend?
(It hast to be as Cheap as possible - This is how we work here, and this is why we "can't afford" decent VPS, a proper dedicated remote server, or even a decent Internet connection)

Also which software would you reccommend?

I know WAMP is not the strongest platform, but I have a lot of experience with it, and have used it succesfully on the past.

So If anyone is succesfully using WAMP, XAMP or any other Windows AMP bundle, that will be great news.

I might dwell into LAMP if I can find a user friendly enough LAMP bundle to install (AKA: for a Windows dummy user that once managed to install an Ubuntu distro).

Thanks

Hello,

Go with any hardware platform that meets system requirements of OS that you choose + 1GB of extra RAM on top of it. That should be enough for your needs.

You can go with cheaper hardware if you go with a low footprint operating system (Linux distributions optimized for server use, FreeBSD etc). This does require that you do a bit of learning on how to set them up, but there's a lot of material available online that can guide you.

fdv,

If you are already running Windows Server as your operating system, you may want to consider using IIS and FastCGI and the PHP module for IIS, instead of WAMP or XAMP or similar.

You can find fairly complete instructions here:
http://www.activecollab.com/forums/topic/6321/

That topic explains how to install FastCGI and PHP5 (both free) on Windows Server 2008, and set up the environment for activeCollab. The same can be done on Windows Server 2003.

We are not running Windows Server (or any server at all).

We have AC on a shared hosting enviroment, which is so slow that people are not using it, and the software is being blamed.

The XAMP or WAMP question was because currently there is no budget for this project.

We just wanted to do some tests on a local recycled XP machine, so people would start using the software and could actually see the benefits of this system.
And then get the money to upgrade to a real server.

Luckily, since I posted this quiestion we managed to get approval for a completely new machine and will get our hands dirty on a Linux Server.
