activeCollab 3.0.2 BETA, Available for Download

Hi everyone,

We are proud to announce that activeCollab 3.0.2 BETA is available for download from your profile pages. We've been really busy in the last couple of weeks and fixed a ton of bugs all over the system (we closed 200+ tasks within last 4 weeks, some small, some large and it's really hard to mention them all).

We still consider this an early beta, so recommendations that we provided in original announcement still apply:

1. This beta is early beta release. Don't use it in production!!! You should not even think about running it for your projects at this point. In a couple of weeks or so yes, but now - NO!
2. If you are wondering where upgrade instructions are, see #1. We have upgrade script written and tested, but you should skip that step at this point. Instead, set up a new activeCollab 3 instance and play with it - get familiar with the new interface, new tools and see how you can benefit from them to get your projects done faster.
3. Don't send us bug reports - we have plenty of them already (100+) that we are working on. Instead, report only real blockers and small issues that are easily overlooked, as explained here.

While we are talking about bug reports, here's a small list of big issues that we'll be address during beta period:

1. At the moment, only browsers that support history API (HTML5) can use the beta. This excludes older browsers, as well as IE9. Use Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
2. Localization support does not work, so only language that's currently available is English.
3. There is no support for themes or color changes at the moment.
4. Reporting functionality is not in place. You can help by suggesting reports that you might find useful.

… plus all other bugs and issues that we find.

activeCollab 3 is available as an additional download on your license page:

As mentioned before, upgrade instructions are not provided at this point - you should only set up a new installation to get familiar with the system.

As a trial users of the hosted version, can I try the new beta? I just signed up to try the hosted version of aC, but I'd really like to see the new beta.

Hello,

Thank you for evaluating activeCollab. Beta builds are provided to existing customers and developers so they can see what's new, provide feedback and get ready for upgrade when stable release is out. Only at that point it is available for evaluation to everyone else, but not before.

Subscribe for news and announcements at the bottom of activeCollab 3 page to get notified when activeCollab 3 is out.

Hello Illya,

Thank you again for the recent developer release. Upgrading works like charm now.
Some things from a first glance: The /public/assets folder is empty, so I've copied everything from a former release, but some icons are missing (or wrong named).
What a pity abaout text in Markdown. In AC2.3 we use textile in the way, that every output is rendered as textile. We gave out the workflow policy, not to use WYSIWYG editor and so it works. So in AC3 I'll make it the same way.
On notebooks page it would be nice to see what pages (headlines) are in the notebook.
Best, Holger

Hello Holger,

Why did you issue that policy? Have you tried visual editor in activeCollab 3?

An interesting idea. Can't make a promise, but we'll see to play with quick overview of various project object types in the future.

Hello Illya,

I must admit I haven't tried it in the deep. It's just the way our customers gets used to it, and all our past work is in textile.
And we get used to it, too.
E.g. I don't write long texts in browsers textarea. I want them saved on my device, when I write or change long passages. And writing long texts and then reformatting it in teh visual editor takes time. So I write in textile, paste it, save and my output is rendered as expected in HTML.
But maybe we re-think this point when we change to AC3.
Best, Holger

I am not seeing the download link on my profile page. Where can I download it and test it out?

I would agree that adding the pages on the notebooks would help (some), but it does not solve the problem that it is completely out of sync with UX on all other modules.

Inconsistent UX means more training and a greater likelihood it will not get adopted (understood) by users.

The goal is to train a user on the logic, not on the execution and navigation itself. That is significantly compromised here.

Example: Every user we tested with AC3 gets confused with the need of clicking on the arrow next to the project title to launch a project for instance... once they "get it" you would expect to see that behavior everywhere. It looks like that confusion is mitigated by the addition of another "button" but now the question should be asked, why not delete the arrow in the line and just use the button?

We already see a new navigation concept introduced in Outline, a different concept in Tasks Discussions and Files and now another approach in Notebooks...

Introducing a new approach is somewhat palatable if its radical different, but harder when it is fairly similar (like the difference between speaking 2 languages that are closely related, but not exactly the same like Dutch and German :).

Not to be difficult but I though it would be worth considering that less is more, and consistency means predictability and ultimately rapid user adoption (like in LOVE the UI).

Hope I'm not ranting too much. I know I'm a consistency freak who hates to explain things to people... so forgive me.

Sorry for that, we had a minor problem with the way our website determines who has access to beta and who does not. It's covered now.
