What does active collab sends emails for. I know for messages if you check them, but does it email my client every time I add, remove, check off, or change a task? or do anything with files, unless I tell it to, or anything else?
The easy/fast way to find this is to create two accounts with different email addresses.
Then perform tasks with one account and see if the other receives any email messages.

No.

Notifications are sent when someone assigns you a milestone or comments on a message you are subscribed on. You can also notify a user on account creation were welcome email is sent to him with his username and password.
