Email people when task is assigned to them

The notification class that is included seems to be very specifically tuned to notify about new messages. I can throw in some code to call a third mail handler to handle the notifications but I'd PREFER to do it within the app. Has anyone made this change (and might you be willing to share your code?). Within the appropriate part of the code, I have access to the tasklist and it's geturl method so I'm thinking it would be fairly easy to build a meaningful email - just not obvious from where I'm sitting.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the best way to implement this myself? I'm not familiar with the mailing class that is used, though if anyone has a suggestion as to the best way to use it I will. Otherwise I will end up using a 3rd mailing class and just hook in at the add task method.

The next version of ActiveCollab will be closed source so I'm pretty sure your changes will not be used in any official releases. So you can just write up the installation/hack instructions and post them in these forums.
I would appreciate it if you could post the change somewhere I can get at it. Unfortunately I will not be able to continue with the next version of AC as we have to run a secure system and not being able to edit the source will make it unusable for us. Hope you can post it.
