Progress updates

..What stopped us from writing any new post for a month was bitterness of some people who commented..

Pricing and licensing

To be completely honest, that post scares me a bit. First, I am not comfortable about publishing pricing details before activeCollab 1.0 is shipped and I said that earlier. That post will be start of an endless discussion about features, how couldn't it be cheaper, what we should include in free version etc etc etc. You know what I'm talking about. Time that such discussion can consume could easily be invested in making sure that we deliver activeCollab sooner or move to the new office (we couldn't pick a better moment to move :D ).

@Ilja, thank you for your post, it has shed a little light on why and I can sympathize.

In regards to licensing, and pricing. I have many years experience with some of the major software vendors in the world, from Microsoft, Veritas, Symantec, Adobe, VMWare, CommVault, to name a few. I have extensive experience in their cost models and licensing programs.

I invite you to discuss this privately with me, you can run by me what you had in mind and I can tell you how it's likely to work in the market. I will give you an unbiased opinion as quite frankly no one here is more cashed up than we are, so the price you set will not be an issue for us no matter what.

At least you can then have a test to "sound out" the pricing against the expectations of our business, which is quite frankly one of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Thanks for the update, and good luck with the release.

I saw this interesting blog post on Vitamin.com on how to price your web apps. I'm not affiliated with the website in any way.

As shrike with Finnish, I might give you a French translation. We already use AC 0.7 in our small and very francophone company and would love to carry on with the 1.0 as it fullfil most of the needs we have.

@shrike and Mathias:

Thanks for the offer to help. activeCollab 1.0 has a built in localization system, but it is not completed and I really can't promise you that it will be available in v1.0. It is on our roadmap for upcoming releases so it's just a matter of time when it will be included, but at this point we have few tasks that have higher priority.

@jonto:

Thanks for the link - it's a nice read. If you are interested in pricing and business of software go to Joel on Software. There are some really nice articles on pricing, segmentation and similar topics.

Any news on when you will be releasing information on the API and other methods of interfacing with the new system. We have created a bunch of tools that allow us to cross integrate with the aC 0.71. We want to start planning on getting them functional with this new version when it is released.

Hi designica,

API documentation will be available with official release for sure. We'll see if we can finish it for the release candidate launch, but I really can't promise anything.

Ilija - sounds good... Thank you for the reponse. Looking forward to testing this new version - hopefully it will be a solid foundation that we can use to add all our other application to.
