I was going to buy activecollab, when I click "Buy Now" button, it says on the next page $399
After I have entered all my infos and clicked "next":

Order information
Product Quantity Price per Unit Total
activeCollab Corporate 1 399.00 USD 399.00 USD
VAT 22.0%: 87.78 USD

Total: 486.78 USD

so actually it costs $500?

Can you please explain the VAT? What is it for? Why is it so high?

If your company is located in the European Union and you have a valid VAT ID, you don't have to pay any tax. We actually purchased it for around 290 Euros. :)

I don't understand this VAT thing at all. I've never heard of it. This doesn't apply to people in the United States, right?

We don't pay VAT in the US, it's kind of like the sales taxes we have here in the US (but different ;)). You can read all about it in the link Ilija posted: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_added_tax
