I'm fine with the client downloading by http (even prefer it) but somehow we would need to put up a 300MB video or other collection of large files.

the only really viable workaround i have found is to put a file in a publicly-accessible directory on my site, and link that file in a message on the project page. obviously this is not secure, and it can be confusing since the linked file does not show up in the "files" section.... if there was some way you could add a file to the file section which is linked remotely, (even if on the same domain/server only) this could be a big help. anybody know if that's even possible?

I really don't have idea how easy this would be to make happen, but for me this is a MUST, and I would imagine it is so for many others... I need to be able to upload large files via FTP, and work with them in aC. It doesn't matter if I'm the only one who has access to my FTP site - I'm the only who needs to upload such large files... and a browser interface just isn't practical for that (at least none that I've seen.. and please don't start looking at java-based - not stable in my experience!). Other users would be ok in my system to be limited by the browser-based upload, if they have to be to retain the security of my FTP site.

For example, I'm working on a project in which I'm hiring out work to a freelancer, and I need to send him a 57mb zip file containing some artwork files. Because this is such a pain - even if I figured out how to change the system-imposed file size limit, which I haven't yet - I simply chose to forego involving him in my newly-setup collaboration system (now less than 48 hours since i first installed it) - which in the long run of the project would be much more productive to have him familiar with the system - I simply put it on my ftp server and gave him access to that... it's doubling my efforts to set up access to two separate systems. If he could access my aC site, see project details, and download the 57mb file he needs all in one place, it would be much more productive. And when he sends me back something, it's probably going to be a <7mb PDF file anyway, so the browser-based limitations are fine on his end.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but it all boils down to this: the reason I was sold on the idea of aC initially, as compared to Basecamp, etc, was the fact that I can have it on my own server, and thus not have the file storage limitations. So isn't there any way I can't fully utilize that ability?

allowing designation from a directory at the add file stage could work. but, that would still limit the ability for clients to send large files without the direct FTP access.

what about a Java solution for the uploader? maybe im mistaken, but it seems like ive seen a Java uploader that didnt have any file size constraints. is that possible?

It would be feasible, for me at least, to have the main administrator to be the only one with ftp access... and then you could simply have an "inbox" of new files in the uploads directory, noting that they need to be assigned to a project. This would be a GREAT way to utilize the space of my own server, and for being able to upload files at one time (such as overnight/end of day) and organize them later once they are uploaded.
