The limit on the number of projects is the biggest issue to consider, as it is simply not logical if you host aC yourself.

WOAH! Those prices are really high. I couldn't praise activeCollab enough before but now I feel I've been slapped right in the face.
Wasn't activeCollab made purely to show that Basecamp could be made open source and for free?
What will happen with the old versions of aC? Can we still use them without fear of legal action?
What's next? Wordpress for $20,000?
This is really bad. I guess I'll just use Basecamp then instead, since it's cheaper anyway.
I feel really gutted and disappointed.

No. What kind of goal is that?
I created activeCollab for personal use, when I was a student, couldn't afford Basecamp and had a lot of free time. I didn't want to show anything, no monsters to slay, no capitalists to hate, no ideology or stuff like that. Just a handy tool I developed because I needed it sitting on my localhost that I decided to release because there was a lot of people who needed something similar.
I'll need to write a blog post about this :)

Of course. Old versions are 100% open source so you can do pretty much anything you want with them as long as it does not violate HPL license (GPL v2 with ASP loophole covered).

Soulcalibur, have you not been reading the rest of the thread? llija said that he is going to reconsider pricing structure. Give the guy a break already. He's a sharp guy. I think he'll come through.
Looks like ProjectPier.org has already given everyone an option. You just gotta love open, free markets, OSS, & GPL. I think this is by far the perfect solution for everyone:
AC gets to do what it wishes, however it wishes, and price its products at the highest price the market can bear (as it rightfully should).
Customers will either gladly pay for the higher value, or switch to ProjectPier.org which represents the continued development of the the 0.71 release.
Problem solved. Let the market make the choice.

This in my opinion is fine then. I guess I'm just disappointed because I really like aC and wanted all the new stuff :P Oh well, I obviously can't complain when the original is free and such a quality product. In that case, I thank you for all your hard work and wish you all the best with your new venture.
I'm a small 2 person shop and we regularly have anywhere from 20-30 projects going on at once. For basecamp it would cost us basically $552/year and for GoPlan it's only $240/year which is why we've been using ActiveCollab 0.7.1 (although I like basecamp and goplan way better than ac 0.7.1). That's basically with the same feature set that the new ActiveCollab 1.0 is listing! If ActiveCollab with the basic basecamp/goplan features costs $598/year I see no compelling reason not to finally bite the bullet and just go basecamp or goplan. Am I missing something or is the feature set more than what basecamp or goplan offers in the new one? It's difficult to tell without seeing it, where with basecamp and goplan I can try it for free to see how it works. Honestly I really had my hopes up that for a small price I could have something that was basically an improvement on the activecollab I've been using for free so this is really disappointing. Maybe I'm missing something though and it's really way better than basecamp or goplan, I just can't tell because I can't try it.
You buy the software once, and pay only 199 for upgrades the years afterwards. So this year it will cost you 399, next years 199. If you decide not to pay any longer, the software (and code) is still yours to use.

I work full time in the non-profit sector with two different organizations. I recently set up activeCollab .71 for both to test it out. It's great and everyone thinks it is very promising and will be a great help, but once 1.0 is released and the pricing structure is enacted, it is doubtful that we will continue using your product. We rely heavily on open source software and free web based services (Drupal, flickr, wordpress, Google Apps, etc...). Will there still be a free offering for personal or non-profit use? If not, are there any incentives to use activeCollab over Project Pier?
