For all of you who experience similar problems - if activeCollab hangs and dies after 30 or 60 seconds (or any long period of time) try turning off version checking:

1. Open database using phpMyAdmin
2. Open table config_options and find option with name upgrade_check_enabled
3. Set its value to 0 and save the record
