Notification kills line breaks

When sending out a notification, all line breaks are killed. Why is this so?

They should not be stripped. Is this happening for all notifications or just specific ones?

Tickets are fine, discussions are not.
It's not the notification itself that gets stripped, but the content (every 'line break' supposes new line):
Dear XXX,
XXX has started a new discussion in XXX.

Test message Line break Line break linebreak

XXX
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED MESSAGE
