When viewing a ticket, just take a look at the menu on the right and you will notice "New Task" item.

They are so feature rich that some people use them as subprojects.

Tasks are smaller steps in execution of a bigger task. They never stand alone, instead they are attached to other object such is checklist, ticket or a page. Check out the screenshot I've attached to this message. Here we have a ticket broken into many tasks that are executed one by one. When we complete all tasks ticket will be closed.
