No, that is not possible and we don't have plans to introduce that feature any time soon.

Such feature make upgrade process a living hell for both customers who are not web dev savvy and for the support. If you want to hack the core files, you can do that, but we do not have plans to make the upgrade process more complex than it should be because of that.

Note to Ilja: for us, extension developers, life could be easier if we were able to "overwrite" template files with our custom ones, for example:
if there is file /themes/my_theme/tpl/module_name/index.tpl , it should automatically overwrite core file index.tpl .

Is this possible?

I applied mphillips' patch and began modifying various parts to suit our needs, as we have stripped out the starring functionality. After looking through his code, I wasn't quite happy with partially the html and javascript parts, as the expanders and content divs are marked with the same id's, so I reworked bits and pieces and streamlined some css errors.

I've attached my changes to his patch and it looks (almost) alike in FF 3.6, IE7/8 and Safari 5.

Edit: I rewrote the javascript so it doesn't "pollute" the jQuery namespace anymore.
