There is nothing special about it and the sole reason why this information is posted is because GMail is popular, reliable and free so many people use it. It works when other options (like your hosting provider for example) may fail to provide reliable service. Check out this topic to see mailing issues on GoDaddy server for example.

Just a quick note, this will work with Google Apps -- only difference would be username would be you@yourdomain.com instead of a gmail.com address --- but the smtp.gmail.com is still the correct outgoing server address.

To set up GMail, go to Administration > Mailing and from Mailing type drop-down select SMTP. Settings are:

Host: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Authentication: Yes
Username: #YOU#@gmail.com
Password: #YOUR_PASSWORD#
Security: SSL
