Sorry, missed the part where you say that you already use that approach.

Our opinion is that it would not be good if system allowed you to post content as other users. We are not saying that you would abuse it or anything like that, it just conceptually feels a bit wrong.

If you really need this, system is open so you can change the data directly in the database or write a module that changes created_by information for any object in the system.

Yes, thats what I said I did but and it works fine, but its sometimes nice to see the conversations started FROM the client since certain employees tend to read a clients post before an internal one.

Have you tried to create a new discussion and post client's message as quoted text. This way you can present the idea client proposed, as well as start the discussion.

We do this all the time with comments posted by users on forum, support email and twitter. It's pretty clear communication and we had nobody confusing these comments as our won.

Ever run into a situation where the client sends you an email and you figure its PERFECT for a discussion in the AC system but you dont want to start it yourself because then you have to explain that the discussion started with the questions from the client and not you and then quote the email content?

Ok, maybe just me, but I was thinking that an admin might have the ability to set a discussion item as created by another user in the system. This way I could create the discussion and do so 'as' the client, including the email content as if they themselves did it or used the import mail features.

I know its a minor thing but sometimes topics started from the client are easier to spot and quickly understand where the conversation stems.
