You can do the same with Google Chrome (Page -> Create Application Shortcuts) or Firefox using Firefox Prism Extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6665).

I'm using a way using Google Chrome for this as it seems fastest for me.

http://fluidapp.com works very well on Mac. It has some nice features for Gmail as for example a dock badge for new mail.
