When I click on a thumbnail it still opens in a new window, though. Clicking on the large image of this new window causes a lightbox window to open with the full size image. Is there a problem with that somehow?

My dream-come-true would be a thumbnail gallery view for photos (w/ no info or details) and clicking on the thumbnails would open a lightbox image. Lightbox image would have previous & next for slideshow mode.

I guess what we really need is a photo gallery module...
