I've just updated Scheduled Tasks article in Administrator's Guide to include more details:

1. What are scheduled tasks and why they are required?
2. How do we protect task URL-s from direct access
3. Different methods to trigger Scheduled Tasks
4. Configuring Scheduled Tasks on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and other operating system using schtasks, cron or launchd.
