Here's something from Basecamp I'd love to see included. We have some non-techie people with access to projects. They can't always be counted on to log into the site as often as they should.

One nice thing about BC was that email notifications included the entire contents of the message/comment. This is really nice for people that just want to see the message in an email and move on. Lots of times you really don't need to respond or take action. So it would be nice to be able to either enable this globally or let users choose their notification preferences themselves.

Thoughts?

I've excluded this because it would make some users actually reply to that email. This way they need to log in to see the content and comment.

It just seamed as a good idea at a moment.

Yeah, I do this with my basecamp a lot. Where I want to reply to the email. Now if there's a way to configure an email account for activecollab to read (via pop3 or something) and then set up its reply to for that email to automagically put in the system that would be hot. Of course there's security issues, but let's say you automagically generated a random unique string to send out in the email that provides enough security to allow that person to just hit reply, and if the code is in there, it puts it into the comments. And if it's not, it sends out another email just telling them to log in to the comments and there was a failure. This, of course, would be something you can turn on or off, and would be a "bell" or "whistle" that someone considers after 1.0 comes out :)

yeah, I agree the urge to hit reply is hard to get around. However, it's common to have clients and collaborators that are very busy and want things short-and-sweet. I know they'd rather just get the gist of the message, toss the email and go about their business.

Again, would be great to have it as an option to enable if you want.

I've been thinking about email as "input", but there are some technical problems there (SPAM - can be solved easily, formats - what if someone sends a HTML message, Cron need to be enable so activeCollab can actually check email on every 10, 30 mins or something, it need to be easy to cinfigure, system need to be flexible enough so future plugin developers can reuse it). Its not a simple thing to do, but I think that we'll eventually come up with something nice there ;)

To enable this feature user will need to have some experience - setting a Cron, POP account etc.

Just for those that may want this feature, would there be something easily added to new_message.php and new_comment.php that could load the message body?

I like FireBox's suggestion have an optonal checkbox to include the MSG in the e-mail alert. Coz as said sometimes ppl don't need to respond.

I strongly agree with making this an administrative option. My team is migrating from BaseCamp and we are struggling with adoption issues as we rely on the ease of reading the emails for 1 way communication. This could also be resolved by RSS, but having all the options (as a greedy end-user, I say) would be ideal. Thanks Ilija.

Yes, please... an option to include the message in the e-mail would be great. It's actually kind of annoying just to have a notification e-mail telling you there is a message but you need to click on the link to see what the message is. It would save a lot of time for the users.

This is exactly what I am after at the moment, is there an easy way to modify the new_message.php and new_comment.php files to enable this functionality as FireBox suggested??
