The main reason why we have been quiet lately is because we are busy working on the next big release - activeCollab 3. Our policy is that we do not discuss upcoming releases until they are ready for testing, but we need to make a couple of announcements this time. activeCollab 3 has bigger system requirements than activeCollab 1 and activeCollab 2 and we want to give you enough time to upgrade your platform.

Here is what'll change:

  • No more support for PHP4. Minimal PHP version will be PHP5, where PHP 5.0.x is considered deprecated and we recommend that you use PHP 5.1 or later. Moving to PHP5 will help us get rid of all the unnecessary code that was required for activeCollab to work well on PHP4 and pay back some of our technical debt. Also, with language enhancements that PHP5 has, it's finally possible to implement some of the ideas that we wanted to introduce, but had to put aside because of PHP4 compatibility. This will make system more stable and future development much easier.
  • Minimal MySQL version will be MySQL 4.1 because we rely on Unicode and want to take advantage of some of the features that are pretty common and frequently used, but not available in MySQL 3.23.x (like subqueries, for example).
  • Support for Internet Explorer 6 will no longer be maintained, as previously discussed. If something works in IE6, than great, but we will not spend any more time testing for this browser.

Our decision to support some older versions of software that activeCollab runs on made a perfect sense back in 2007, but it's 2010. now, some things have changed considerably and we feel that it's time to move on.

However, most of you'll want to know when activeCollab 3 will be available... Be aware that we can't promise any specific date (not even a month), and that we are talking months here, not weeks or days. This should give you enough time to get ready for the new release.

Our development team have a pleasure to invite you to join us in testing process of the migration of your data (including files) from Basecamp to activeCollab.

If you are interested, please make sure you:

  1. Have a valid activeCollab license (Corporate or SmallBiz) - only users with licenses will be able to participate in Alpha testing phase.
  2. Enable your Basecamp API - the account owner needs to do this. This action is required because migration of your data is enabled trough Basecamp API, and we need this gateway to be open.

Please send us an email on support@a51dev.com with:

  1. Exported Basecamp XML file - the account owner needs to do this, also
  2. Your Basecamp credentials - domain name, username and password of one of the Admin users from your Basecamp account
  3. If you wish to have this data placed in your activeCollab, we'll need FTP access to your activeCollab installation.

All information you sent us will be treated as your private data according to our Privacy Policy. Therefore we won’t deliberately abuse this data or disclose it to a third parties. It will be used for testing purposes only.

It's been a long beta (mostly due to summer and holidays - we need some rest too!), but here it is: activeCollab 2.3. This new release is available to everyone who had valid Upgrades and Support plan when beta was started (June 25th). Download package is available on your activeCollab profile pages, as usual:

This release is built on top of activeCollab 2.1.4 and brings two new modules to Corporate edition:

  1. Invoicing module lets you prepare and issue invoices. This module is built right into activeCollab and does not require any external invoicing service (and therefore no additional monthly fees);
  2. Source modules adds Subversion integration to the system. Now you can add as many Subversion repositories to the projects as you want. activeCollab automatically connects commit messages with tickets. You can even complete a ticket with a commit message!

Release notes are available here. Installation and upgrade instructions are same as for beta versions. Just don't forget to install Invoicing and Source modules once you install / upgrade your setup.

Thank you for your continued support!

PS: Hosted demo still runs activeCollab 2.1.4, but we'll have it updated soon ;)
