You are wondering why is activeCollab 0.7 late and when it will be available?

activeCollab 0.6 was a really easy to produce because it was a bugfix release. No new stuff there, just a lot of fixed problems that made people go crazy when alpha1 was introduced. 0.7 is a whole different story. There is already a user base that want an easy upgrade without data loss, it has some new tools in the system and many of existing ones are improved, it is more “future friendly” (user can see what version is installed, when new version is available administrator will get a small reminder etc), it will let users install aC even when installer breaks and stuff like that. Really nice set of changes in my opinion.

One more important thing that most users don’t know about 0.7 is that 0.7 will be a release that will stick around for at least two months without any major update. Critical bugs will be fixed and released, but that's all. Because of that 0.7 need to be solid and feature complete.

So, here is the list of things that need to be done before we roll out activeCollab 0.7. Some of them are easy, some are already fixed (just need to be tested), other are not so easy or they are simple but really time consuming (building an upgrade script for instance). Use that list as a progress indicator, not dates.

And the most limiting factor in the whole story: time. Things get really interesting when you have only one person who is supporting the project, building a new version and trying to make a living at the same time. I’m not saying that I’m not loving it, I really enjoy working on activeCollab… Its is so fun! I’m just saying that I’m not as fast as 10 – 50 people software company.

Thanks a lot for this update. It was very much needed. By the way, i think you can roll out 0.7 even without the update script because there are many more new users (Like me!!) waiting for 0.7 to be released so that we can start using this. A very rough release date will be usefull too.

Hey, thanks for the info. I’m using 0.6 right now, no real problems but one can never have enough bugfixes.

Thanks so much for creating this!

Keep up the good work and thanks a lot for the great tool.

Thanks for the update, Ilija. Don’t go too crazy trying to get it out, we may be enthusiastically awaiting the release but we’d much prefer to have a healthy & happy Ilija with a later release than an Ilija who drove himself crazy :-)

I have been wondering when it will be released. I’m definitely looking forward to it but also understand that you’re working hard on this by yourself. Do the best you can, but also give yourself some time to relax as well.

Man, this 0.6 is great, take your time, and make 0.7 as important as 0.6 was when some of us found out about this project.

Agreed with Jason, Rob and Damien.

Everyone knows:

1. 0.7 is really near.

2. Ilija wants it out as much as everyone else.

0.7 will be a meaningful release.

you know, when you are one person, it is hard to do it all yourself. Eventually you’ll need to start acepting and delegating help.

I tend to take on a lot myself (and can handle it ;) ) . Looking forward to it, but rather it would be solid then rushed.

Thanks a lot Ilija, we are all behind you on this. With the massive amount of interest and support behind this, is there going to be a way for users to contribute to the code after this? Then maybe you can employ all of the community to do your bidding while you do your job.

Thanks very much for the update Ilija. I’m waiting until 0.7 before trying out this software and I’m really looking forward to it. But – take your time, and don’t get too distracted by the endless demands. Just do things your way, pace yourself, don’t be afraid to say “no, not yet” every now and again (or every 5 seconds .. heh) and most of all, remember the reason you’re doing it at all – have fun!

All the best and kind regards from Tokyo, Japan…

Is there a place to donate moolah or anything towards the project?

This project is great (it’s getting better every day)

Take your time Ilija (But I have to confess that I visit the trac everyday :) )

Thanks

We would be happy to pay a few USD for it.
We can not use BaseCamp for various reasons.

I’d take your time but the upgrade script is important. There would be lots of people in ‘0.6 land’ for some time.

Also I’d like to suggest that if people get this working in their business, to donate money to the project.

Ilija,

If you want a helping hand with code or documentation, please contact me by email.

I have just installed aC on Dreamhost, it looks really good but (there is always a but) I have already had to fix one bug (the can’t edit company details one) by editing the code. Even this would be an immediate show stopper for a non techy as I discovered the fix by looking at the forums.

Because of issues like this 0.6 isn’t IMHO ready for general use yet and 0.7 must be as good as possible. Perhaps you could consider stabilising what you have and doing a 0.7RC1 release for people to do some early testing?

Also apropos your upgrade script, it should always be safe to run the upgrade script more than once, i.e. it should check if it is necessary before doing anything.

Ilija, you say you’re “not as fast as 10 – 50 people software company”. I say you are faster and better.

Thanks for creating activeCollab!

Everyone posting here asking for release dates should fucking shame themselves! Go ahead and donate $100,000 so the guy can hire a squad of programmers and THEN ask when you can expect a result. Until you do that, shut that hole in your face and be very, very thankful for what you have now, for free you damn crackpots.

Michael.

Hey Michael,

The language is unnecessary and you should learn to read.

No one asked for a release date or expected a result. We are all waiting (impatiently perhaps but waiting) and many of us have offered to help.

Ilija, I had little idea YOU where flying solo here, heck of a job man, specially by not giving up :) , now, I’m very interested in using aC and I’m very interested in having it geared up, and with all the time limitations I also have, I am more than interested in lending a not-so-weak hand to the project :) I’ll take a look at the main site for how to assist you, but either way, you’ve got my mail, make the connection man :)

You’ve done a tremendous job, thanks for your efforts. You are doing the pragamtic thing by considering the migration path, and is much appreciated. Take your time.
