New release (0.7) is so close that I think its time to share with you what are the plans for activeCollab 0.8

One big problem with current activeCollab development process is that its pretty much closed. Community was just a spectator most of the time. That is about to change, because I know the importance of active community that is involved in every aspect of project development. So, here are the goals of activeCollab 0.8:

  • Framework will be extracted. During the extraction process I’ll put a lot of attention on API documentation, tests and performance.
  • Full API. It will be foundation for building rich interface and for providing data to plugins.
  • Plugin support will be introduced with full documentation for plugin developers. Also, activeCollab will handle common task like providing search, comments, file attachments, email notifications and similar task for developers. They should concentrate on fun stuff – building their plugins, not the plumbing.
  • Markup and design guidelines. It is really important to provide consistent interface that does not look like it was patched together by 700 developers. Few interface designers approached me and offered to help with the interface so we’ll work on many design and usability improvements. At the same time we’ll produce official recommendations, sets of markup elements, styles and widgets that plugin developers will be able to use to easily fit their solutions in overall look and feel of application and ensure that things look as expected even when theme is changed.
  • We’ll provide official repository for plugins, themes and translations.

As you can see, there is a lot of things that are planned for 0.8. Most important goal of this changes is to finally get people involved in development process – core developers, plugin developers, interface designers, integrations… We’ll provide you with tools and resources and see what all of us together can make! As Mike said: lets put collab into activeCollab!

Great Ilija, this sounds like a really useful step forward. These changes are the kind of changes that constitute a tipping point for an application.

Everyone has certain needs, and the plugins and API allow people to customize those needs. And where the application is currently limited, the open source aspect of it allows for someone to change it as needed. If we could all add our piece to it then that would be great. The adoption rate will spike once we all have a piece of ourselves in activeCollab.

PS
Also, it’s as MIKE said. I said that. dammit.

Sorry Mike :( I had a strange feeling that I made a mistake, but I’ve just submited the post and went to bed without checking.

Ilija,

Excellent – the API and plugin support is exactly what this system needs in order to make it surge in popularity.

While my coding skills are strongest in Java (and Ruby, lately), I’d be willing to contribute some time to do QA/testing of new releases as well as attempt to write a preliminary plugin or two.

Shoot me an email if you’d like to talk about it further and thanks again for the great work you’re doing!

This is super exciting! I can’t wait to use AC as an excuse to learn how to write widgets for OSX!

The plugin concept is really, really exciting. Could this be the Wordpress of Project Management? I’d love to see or maybe even write a plugin that allows for cascading tasks/to-do items, that is, they’re not seen/active on the top level until their predecessor step has been completed. It’s the one feature I’ve found missing in all the PM apps I’ve looked at…yippee! Yippee!!

It’s all looking very promising, and I am quite impressed so far. I’ve been testing 0.7 beta for a few days now and it looks pretty good. I can’t use it in a production environment yet as it seems to still contain some problems which can be rather,.. well, destructive. Right now I can’t even log in anymore :)

“We are sorry, but activeCollab is not able to execute your request. Error report has been sent to the administrator.” (meanie)

Are there any nightly builds of 0.7 beta available? I can’t seem to find them.

So far, thanks for all the great work. If activeCollab was a female I would…. nah,.. but I do like it, a lot :)

There are no nightly builds available. There are instructions how to use code from SVN: Using the code from SVN repository

Note that most recent code is not in trunk but in 0.7 brench.

Hi Ilija,

Looking forward to 0.7 stable. Currently attempting to play with the beta. Pulled it from the SVN checkout branch noted above. I get to the “Complete the installation” fine, but when I add my administrator details and click submit, I get the following alert in Firefox…

“Firefox doesn’t know how to open this address because the protocol© isn’t associated with any program.”

I can only assume that the revision I pulled down is not functional at the moment?

What revision do you have, just to know what to use to test?

Great goals ! I had my eyes on the project for a few months, I must say I like the way things are going and I think the future looks promising :)

I have been testing ActiveCollab quite a bit and I’ll get involved as soon as I finished my current web projects. Might also convince a MODx developper to try out an integration as a module.

@fpradignac and destry : nice to see you there, guys :)

Sorry Ilija,

I fell off the edge of the world.

I just installed the latest rev, 164, and I didn’t have the problem as noted above. I’ll play around and see how it goes. I’m following this project, and will look for time to help out. (Time, where does it go?)

@davidm: what up david? Your like fog on an early Frisco morning…everywhere!

Hi Ilija,

I have 2 areas of interest to what is added in Activecollab:

1) 2-3 month calendar view
2) Group chat with archiving

Any guess when these might be added to the product?

Regards.

Actually, I don’t know. Chat plugin is not planed for 0.8. Calendar views are an open option but we’ll see how it will all work out with the interface.
